M.A. in Philosophy
Information for Prospective Students
Master of Arts in Philosophy
The Philosophy Department at Saint Mary’s University has a small but thriving MA program which typically admits one or two students a year. We have particular strengths in ethics, social and political philosophy, epistemology, aesthetics, philosophy of education, history of late modern philosophy, and philosophy of science and its history.
Graduate students in Philosophy quickly become active participants in the life of the department, and regularly participate in local philosophical conferences and colloquia with department members. The department also offers opportunities for graduate students to be mentored in the theory and practice of teaching their discipline, through classroom observation, participation, curriculum development and delivery, and discussion. Generous fellowships are available, funded by the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.
We admit students who have a record of academic accomplishment in their Bachelor’s degree, whose research interests match those of our faculty. Potential applicants are encouraged to consult the Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Todd Calder to discuss their thesis topic prior to making formal application to the program.
