The Spatial Incidence of Exploration License Expenditures in Nova Scotia, 1981

The purpose of this report is to examine (a) To what extent did the pattern of exploration expenditures vary spatially in Nova Scotia in 1981?, and (b) What factors influenced these variations in expenditures? Reasons for looking at these questions are that exploration leads to one of the major components of the Nova Scotian and Canadian economies - mining, and the lack of geographic research in this field.

The extent to which the pattern of exploration expenditures varied spatially was established by plotting the exploration areas upon a map.

Factors which were found to influence the pattern were:

1. the size of the exploration areas,
2. the number of tracts in a distance band from a road,
3. number of tracts in a distance band from a past and/or present mine.

The need for more detailed and/or comparative analysis is suggested.
