Dr. Colin Howell (B.A., M.A.  Dalhousie, PhD, Cincinnati) is Professor Emeritus in History and recently retired Academic Director of the Centre for the Study of Sport and Health at Saint Mary`s. Dr. Howell was a co-founder of the Atlantic Canada Studies undergraduate and graduate programs, the Gorsebrook Research Institute, the Austin Willis Moving Images Research Centre, and the Centre for the Study of Sport and Health. He has published widely in the field of sport and health studies, authoring Blood, Sweat and Cheers: Sport and the Making of Modern Canada (2001), Northern Sandlots (1995), a history of the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax and several edited collections.  In 2001 he initiated the Putting it on Ice series of hockey conferences which created a renaissance in hockey scholarship internationally. Dr. Howell was co-editor of the Canadian Historical Review, Canada’s senior historical journal, from 1988 to 1992. He received the President’s Award for Research at Saint Mary’s (1998), the Annual Award of Merit from the Association of Canadian Studies (1996) the Heritage award of the Society of North American Hockey Researchers for excellence in sports writing.
