Bob Shaw - Builder of a Key Sobey MBA Experience

An editorial in The Chronicle Herald on Saturday, December 10, 2005, described Bob Shaw as a builder, not only of homes but also of humanity. In addition to building communities in his role as Vice-Chairman and Director of The Shaw Group, and building spirit as a leader in the community at large, Bob Shaw built a strong foundation of support for Saint Mary’s University.

A scholarship student himself, Bob began giving back long before graduating in 1968 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. A 2008 posthumous induction into the Saint Mary’s University Turning Points Hall of Leadership recognized Bob’s outstanding leadership as president of SMUSA, member of the University’s Board of Governors, president of the Alumni Association, chair of the Building on Strength Capital Campaign and member of the Business Development Centre Board. Bob Shaw was a Fellow of the Canadian Chartered Accountant Institute. He volunteered as Chair and Director of numerous foundations and organizations, including the Nova Scotia Hospital Foundation, The Abilities Foundation and the Metro United Way Corporate Campaign. He was also past President of both the Canadian and the Nova Scotia Home Builders’ Association.

With his name attached to the Bob Shaw Case Competition, his legacy is that he continues to build—in this case, future leaders, through the Sobey School of Business MBA Program.

Mike Brown - Entrepreneur Supporting Other Entrepreneurs

Mike Brown began his journey at Saint Mary's as a less-than-keen student. That was until he enrolled in one of Dr. Ellen Farrell's Entrepreneurship classes. He discovered his passion, founding Green Gutters as a class project. The company grew into a million-dollar enterprise, which he sold to begin his next business, Clean Simple. Originally an office cleaning company, Clean Simple has developed a software platform that allows other office cleaners to easily manage their finance and assets. Along with his sharp entrepreneurial instincts, Mike demonstrates a strong philanthropic tendency. While he was still a student, he sponsored a $500 scholarship for other students, and has continued to do so. He also supports Feed Nova Scotia, and has engaged in other fundraising efforts in support of mental health.
