A Giving Perspective
Rowland Marshall describes himself as a small-scale philanthropist, but there’s nothing small about the support the former philosophy professor provides for Saint Mary’s students.
Marshall and his wife, Margó Takacs Marshall, established a variety of student awards, including:
- The Joyce Elizabeth Marshall Hsia Poetry Award
- The Margó Marshall Entrance Bursary
- The Margó Marshall Scholarship
- The Marshall Award for Excellence in a Masters Philosophy Dissertation Award
After Margó’s passing in 2010, Marshall honoured her by endowing the Margó Takacs Marshall Prize for Excellence in Short Story Writing,. “I am guided by Margó’s generosity—and her belief in the importance of contributing to the community,” says Marshall.
When faced with the death of a loved one, Marshall acknowledges the tendency to withdraw from new experiences. His recent gift, however, reflects a continued commitment to engaging with the world—a fitting tribute for Margó Takacs Marshall, a generous and caring woman who became a published author and blogger at the age of 80.
